August 2001

Jost Van Dyke is a small island that makes up part of the British Virgin Islands.  You need to fly into either St. Thomas or Tortola and then take a ferry to JVD.  We stayed at the wonderful White Bay Villas located by White Bay Beach.

Our Arrival

We left on a Wednesday morning from Newark Airport and after a crazy adventure, we finally arrived to JVD on FRIDAY AFTERNOON!

One of the Locals:

One of the first locals we meet are goats roaming on the one and only road/highway on JVD.

Rain Storm:

Here's a pic of a big rainstorm heading our way.  It's nice to get some advanced notice of an oncoming downpour.  We took cover immediately!

JVD's One and Only Road:

This road is actually new.  It goes around the whole island (about a half hour drive). Can be quite hilly at times.

Our Villa!

This is White Bay Villas.  We can't say enough wonderful things about this place.  We were supposed to arrive on Wednesday but due to airline troubles, we arrived on Friday.  John Klein, the owner, was gracious enough to allow us to stay till the end of the following weekend without charging us extra!  Now how many hotels would do the same thing???  We encountered many people in the airport who lost their days due to problems with flights (a volcano had erupted somewhere in the Caribbean and cause flight cancellations).  Throughout the whole ordeal, John and the people of White Bay Villas were extremely helpful.  We will definitely be going back to them in the near future!!

One of the many yachts at the beach.  I think we're going to try yachting one of these days.

Downtown:

We called this area the "downtown" area.  This the Main Street of JVD. Most of the buildings are restaurants and some shops.

Ivan's Beach Bar:

This beach bar is located on White Bay, a small walk from our villa.  We had a great time meeting Ivan and other visitors to the island.

Inside Ivan's:

Here's an inside view of Ivan's.  This bar is unique-- it has an honor system.  You keep a tab (in his notebook) of the drinks you order...or make on your own. Although there's a bartender...kind of...everyone was free to get/make their own drink.  But the best drinks are Painkillers--the name says it all. At the end of our week, we paid our tab...and yes, we were honest!! :)

Other Islands:

There are many islands close to JVD that are easy to reach by boat or ferry.  St. John's and Tortola are the most accessible.
